Kevin Brown
Senior/Lead Forecaster
NWS Norman Office

Kevin Brown received his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in meteorology at the University of Oklahoma in 1992.  Kevin’s inspiration to study meteorology was experiencing dry line activity and winter storms while growing up in the Texas Panhandle.

Kevin works for the National Weather Service Norman Forecast Office as a Senior/Lead Forecaster.  He is interested in operational forecasting and severe weather preparedness and safety.

A typical day at work consists of rotating shifts – a week of 8AM to 4PM, then a week of 4PM to midnight, followed by a week of midnight to 8AM.  With these rotating shifts, the types of weather and weather support provided always changes from shift to shift.  As a senior forecaster, Kevin is the shift supervisor and oversees the issuance of public, aviation, hydrologic, and fire weather forecasts and warnings for the western two-thirds of Oklahoma and portions of north Texas.  Emphasis is given to hazardous weather conditions, owing to the NWS mission of providing weather information for the protection of life and property.  In addition to providing forecasts and warnings, Kevin and his team also interact extensively with the general public, civil emergency managers, and storm spotters.  Being in Norman, which is a hub for cutting-edge research and development, the Norman forecast office has the opportunity to use new forecasting technologies, and provide feedback for the researchers.

Kevin’s interests include spending time with his wife and two young daughters, hiking, spending time outdoors, and attending the University of Oklahoma sporting events.
